چکیده

[1] Modeling studies suggest that fluid permeability is an important control on the maintenance and distribution of pore fluid pressures at subduction zones generated through tectonic loading. Yet, to date, few data are available to constrain permeability of these materials, at appropriate scales. During IODP Expedition 319, downhole measurements of permeability within the uppermost accretionary wedge offshore SW Japan were made using a dual-packer device to isolate 1 m sections of borehole at a depth of 1500 m below sea floor. Analyses of pressure transients using numerical models suggest a range of in-situ fluid permeabilities (5E-15–9E-17 m2). These values are significantly higher than those measured on core samples (2E-19 m). Borehole imagery and cores suggests the presence of multiple open fractures at this depth of measurement. These observations suggest that open permeable natural fractures at modest fracture densities could be important contributors to overall prism permeability structure at these scales. Strike-slip motion of a mega-splay fault system in the Nankai oblique subduction zone

We evaluated the influence of the trench-parallel component of plate motion on the active fault system within the Nankai accretionary wedge from reflection seismic profiles, high-resolution seafloor bathymetry, and deep-towed sub-bottom profiles. Our study demonstrated that a large portion of the trench-parallel component of oblique plate subduction is released by strike-slip motion along a fau...

Heat flow and fluid flow regime in the western Nankai accretionary prism

The thermal structure of the western Nankai subduction zone has been studied through surface heat flow measurements with conventional geothermal probes and estimation of heat flow from depths of gas hydrate bottom simulating reflectors. Temperature and thermal conductivity measurements at ODP Site 808, located at the toe of the Nankai accretionary prism, added important information on any varia...

ODP Leg 196: Logging-While-Drilling and Advanced CORKs at the Nankai Trough Accretionary Prism

The Nankai Trough marks the location where the Philippine Sea Plate begins subducting beneath the Eurasian Plate. The Nankai Trough subduction system has played an important role in causing many catastrophic earthquakes, a phenomenon observed at many other subduction zones (Ando, 1975). Recent studies have established that fluids play a major role in the physical and chemical evolution of subdu...

Heat flow survey in the vicinity of the branches of the megasplay fault in the Nankai accretionary prism

Heat flow measurements were conducted at four sites in the Nankai accretionary prism southeast of the Kii Peninsula, around the area where the megasplay fault reaches the surface, in conjunction with long-term monitoring of bottom water temperature at nearby stations. Analysis of the obtained data showed that variations in bottom water temperature seriously affect surface heat flow measurements...

Three-dimensional splay fault geometry and implications for tsunami generation.

Megasplay faults, very long thrust faults that rise from the subduction plate boundary megathrust and intersect the sea floor at the landward edge of the accretionary prism, are thought to play a role in tsunami genesis. We imaged a megasplay thrust system along the Nankai Trough in three dimensions, which allowed us to map the splay fault geometry and its lateral continuity. The megasplay is c...
